West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has resigned from his position in a surprising move just before the upcoming Assembly elections. Ananda Bose, who is currently in New Delhi, submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu’s office. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed the Governor’s resignation, although there was no official confirmation from the Governor’s office at the time of reporting.
The Chief Minister revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed her about Ananda Bose’s resignation and mentioned that the current Tamil Nadu Governor, R.N Ravi, would succeed Bose in West Bengal. However, it remains uncertain whether Ravi will assume the role as an acting or full-time Governor.
Expressing shock over the sudden resignation, Chief Minister Banerjee raised concerns about potential political pressures on the Governor. She criticized the lack of consultation regarding Bose’s replacement with Ravi, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles and federal structure. Banerjee urged the Centre to respect cooperative federalism and avoid unilateral decisions that undermine democratic norms.
Ananda Bose, who assumed office as the Governor of West Bengal in November 2022 with a term until November 2027, stepped down 20 months before the completion of his tenure. Known for his vocal stance on various state issues, Bose had openly criticized several policies of the West Bengal government.
