West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has decided to walk on the streets of Kolkata without any security cover on Friday, despite receiving a death-threat email. The threat email was brought to the attention of the Lok Bhavan staff, who then informed the office of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, leading to a decision to revamp the Governor’s security arrangements.
Governor Bose, who is entitled to Z plus category security, remains unfazed by the threat, expressing confidence in the people of West Bengal to protect him. Discussions are underway to enhance security measures both at Lok Bhavan and during official tours to ensure his safety.
An emergency review meeting was held late Thursday night to discuss the proposed overhaul of the Governor’s security arrangements. While the exact details of the security revamp are yet to be disclosed officially, Governor Bose is set to walk on the streets of Kolkata on Friday, coinciding with a rally led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in South Kolkata.
The Governor’s decision to walk without security comes amidst Chief Minister Banerjee’s protest against Enforcement Directorate raids. The time and route of Governor Bose’s walk are yet to be announced, but the Trinamool Congress rally is scheduled for 2 p.m.
