Acting on confidential information, West Bengal’s Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has dismantled an illegal SIM box operation and apprehended a suspect. The police raided a residence in Hatiara, Rajarhat, seizing 9 SIM box machines, over 2,500 active SIM cards, mobile devices, networking equipment, and other accessories.
The covert telecom setup, disguised within an ordinary flat, was illegally rerouting international calls to India using sophisticated technology. By converting VoIP calls from abroad into local calls, the operation evaded telecom regulations, causing significant revenue losses to the government. The arrested suspect, Abir Sheikh alias Monirul Islam Sajib, was caught red-handed operating multiple active SIM box devices during the raid.
Authorities suspect the involvement of a larger interstate or international network behind this illegal operation. Investigations are underway to uncover the financial transactions, SIM card procurement methods, and other accomplices. Bidhannagar Commissionerate officials are interrogating the suspect to gather more information about the illicit ring and its potential security threats.
