The West Bengal Police apprehended Trinamool Congress MLA Dilip Mondal, who had been on the run, from Puri in Odisha. Mondal, representing the Bishnupur constituency in South 24 Parganas district, was detained by the Special Task Force (STF) at a hotel in Puri. He is currently being transported to Kolkata on a transit remand.
A video circulating on social media allegedly shows Mondal threatening workers and supporters of another party, leading to a police complaint against him. Following accusations of intimidation, the police filed a case under non-bailable sections and initiated an investigation. A recent raid at Mondal’s residence in Pailan yielded no results as he had reportedly fled upon learning of the police’s arrival.
After an extensive search operation, the police received information that Mondal was hiding in a hotel in Puri. Acting on this tip, the STF and Diamond Harbour Police located and detained him at the hotel. Earlier, on May 17, the police had arrested five individuals, including Mondal’s son Arghya Mondal, who was found with firearms and accused of instigating unrest in the region.
