West Bengal police conducted a search at Suruchi Sangha club in south Kolkata, which has been embroiled in controversy due to the arrest of Swarup Biswas, brother of former state minister Aroop Biswas, in a molestation case. Swarup was taken to the club by investigators on Tuesday afternoon, following which central forces had cordoned off the Suruchi Sangha premises and surrounding areas in New Alipore.
Former minister Aroop Biswas is currently on the run, while his brother Swarup was apprehended a few days ago. Allegations have emerged against him in the Bengali film industry. Suruchi Sangha in South Kolkata is renowned for organizing Durga Puja and events frequented by celebrities. The club is accused of engaging in various illicit activities involving the Biswas Brothers.
After a change in government, the police took action against the siblings. Swarup Biswas was arrested, leading to local residents vandalizing Aroop and Swarup’s club, Suruchi Sangha. Protesters gathered outside the premises last Friday, broke the lock, and accessed an upper room where a king-size bed and a luxurious attached toilet were discovered.
Locals also accused the club of misappropriating government goods. Numerous bottles of government-supplied ‘Pranadhara’ water and several saris were found in a room next to the clubhouse, heightening suspicions of significant irregularities. Additionally, it is alleged that a separate club building was constructed by encroaching on LIC land, sparking public outrage in the area.
On Monday, police recovered multiple electronic devices and documents from Aroop Biswas’s New Alipore residence. After unlocking a digital safe, investigators seized 14 mobile phones, two iPads, and various documents related to an association associated with the Bengali film industry, which could potentially contain vital evidence.
