The West Bengal government plans to withdraw cases filed during the previous Trinamool Congress regime against doctors and civil society members who participated in peaceful protests after the RG Kar rape and murder in 2024. A judicial commission led by retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Biswajit Basu will recommend the withdrawal based on identifying cases where protesters were allegedly targeted to suppress the agitation for justice.
The police administration will also take action against those responsible for vandalizing the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in North Kolkata in August 2024. The incident aimed to destroy evidence at the crime scene and divert media attention from protests against the rape and murder of a junior doctor.
After the BJP came to power in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered the reopening of the RG Kar case and suspended three IPS officers. The new government’s focus is on ensuring accountability for those involved in tampering with evidence and supporting peaceful protesters by addressing unnecessary cases and harassment.
