The White House Correspondents’ Association used its annual dinner to emphasize the importance of the First Amendment and a free press. Outgoing WHCA President Weijia Jiang highlighted the critical role of a free press in American democracy, stating that while criticism of journalists is acceptable, any attempts to undermine press freedom are a threat to democracy.

Jiang differentiated between criticizing the press, which is constructive, and actively trying to weaken it, which goes against the principles of the nation’s founders. She underscored the significance of the relationship between presidents and journalists as a fundamental aspect of the democratic process.

The event, which had been postponed due to an armed attack, saw Jiang praising the resilience of journalists in the face of adversity. She commended the dedication of reporters, photographers, and TV crews who continued their work even during the crisis. Jiang also noted the shared responsibility of government officials and journalists in keeping the public informed.

Incoming WHCA President Jackie Heinrich reiterated the commitment to pursuing facts impartially and thanked President Trump for attending the dinner. The evening also honored Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzalez, wounded during the attack, along with journalists and media organizations recognized for their outstanding reporting.

President Trump, in his remarks, acknowledged the importance of a free press in democracy, while also expressing his views on political violence and the relationship between presidents and the media. The White House Correspondents’ Association, established in 1914, aims to support journalism through scholarships and fosters interactions between the presidency and the press corps.
