Ahoi Ashtami is one of the most heartfelt and sacred festivals observed by Hindu mothers across India, especially in North India, for the long life, health, and prosperity of their children. It is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month, just four days after Karwa Chauth and eight days before Diwali.
In 2025, Ahoi Ashtami falls on Monday, 13th October.
- Ashtami Tithi Begins: 13th October, 12:24 PM
- Ashtami Tithi Ends: 14th October, 11:09 AM
- Ahoi Puja Muhurat: 5:53 PM – 7:08 PM IST
- Star Sighting (Breaking Fast): Around 6:50 – 7:05 PM IST (check local timings)
Like Karwa Chauth, Ahoi Ashtami is a nirjala vrat (fast without food or water) that continues until the first stars are sighted in the evening.

Why is Ahoi Ashtami Observed?
- The vrat is dedicated to Goddess Ahoi Mata, a compassionate form of Goddess Parvati, who is worshipped as the divine protector of children.
- Women keep this vrat for protection, prosperity, and long life of their children.
- Childless women also observe Ahoi Ashtami with the prayer to conceive.
- The fast is seen as a repentance ritual, rooted in a mother’s selfless love and devotion.
- It is believed that observing this vrat with sincerity removes obstacles from children’s lives, ensures their bright future, and even blesses women struggling with infertility.
Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha (The Sacred Story)

The Moneylender’s Wife and the Curse of Syahu
Long ago, a moneylender’s wife, mother of seven sons, went to the forest before Diwali to dig soil for household repairs. While digging, her spade accidentally killed the cub of a Syahu (a hedgehog-like animal).
Grieved and furious, Syahu cursed her, declaring:
“Your womb shall be bound, and all your sons will perish!”
Soon, within a year, the woman lost all seven of her sons.
The Penance & Divine Grace
Heartbroken, she confessed her grief to an elderly woman in the village. The wise lady advised her to:
- Draw the image of Ahoi Mata and the cub on a wall.
- Observe a strict fast (nirjala vrat).
- Pray sincerely to Goddess Ahoi for forgiveness and protection.
The moneylender’s wife followed the advice with deep devotion. Seeing her repentance, Goddess Ahoi was moved, and she restored her sons’ lives.
Since then, mothers across generations have observed this vrat, fasting for the safety and prosperity of their children.
Meaning of Ahoi:
The word Ahoi is believed to mean “Anhoni ko Honi Banana” – turning misfortune into fortune, just as the goddess did for the moneylender’s wife.
