The Extortion Task Force in Ontario’s Peel region, Canada, has arrested 17 individuals, most connected to an international criminal network called ‘For Brothers’. This group targeted South Asian business owners and community members in regions spanning Canada and the United States. Peel Regional Police dismantled a campaign of intimidation and violence used to extort local businesses, including restaurants and trucking companies.
The criminal network allegedly carried out targeted attacks in Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon, and British Columbia, with ties to California. A Joint Forces Operation involving various law enforcement agencies commenced in December 2025 to address these criminal activities. Investigators linked the accused to 24 incidents, including arson and multiple shootings, with a total of 106 criminal charges.
The arrested individuals, facing charges, may potentially face immigration consequences post their criminal cases. Among those charged are individuals from various locations like Brampton, Surrey, B.C., and California. Peel Regional Police seized firearms, illicit drugs, cell phones, SIM cards, and fraudulent identification cards during the investigation.
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah emphasized the need for cross-border collaboration to combat extortion networks. He highlighted the impact on the South Asian community and reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring community safety. India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh K Patnaik, noted the improved cooperation between Indian and Canadian security agencies.
Patnaik mentioned the enhanced dialogue and joint operations between the two countries to address security concerns. While extremist groups still exist in Canada, efforts have been made to marginalize them and combat organized crime activities. India has urged Canada to differentiate between peaceful protests and violent extremism, emphasizing the need to address violent actions and hate propaganda.
