Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has requested the Calcutta High Court for approval to travel abroad. The Diamond Harbour MP aims to seek medical treatment for his eyes and has asked for a seven-day travel allowance. Despite having no current travel restrictions, Banerjee is involved in ongoing legal cases, and the court has urged his cooperation in these investigations.
Abhishek Banerjee faced severe eye injuries in an accident back in October 2016 while returning from a political event in Murshidabad district. Following treatment at various domestic hospitals, he now plans to pursue medical care overseas. Meanwhile, internal strife within the Trinamool party has led to a split, with MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and his supporters challenging Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership. They have formed a new opposition group, excluding both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee from their ranks.
The dissident faction recently held a meeting at a luxury hotel in Kolkata, establishing a new national working committee. Notably, this committee does not include either of the Banerjees, with Trinamool MLA Arup Roy appointed as the party chairman.
