AC Milan has dismissed head coach Massimiliano Allegri following the team’s failure to secure a spot in the Champions League. The decision came after a disappointing 2-1 loss to Cagliari Calcio in the final Serie A match, causing Milan to slip from third to fifth place in the league standings.
This setback means that Inter Milan, SSC Napoli, AS Roma, and newcomers Como 1907 will represent Italy in the Champions League, while Milan and Juventus FC will compete in the Europa League. RedBird Capital Partners, the club’s owners, expressed dissatisfaction with the season’s outcome, labeling it a significant letdown.
The owners highlighted the team’s inconsistent performance, stating that despite being in contention for the league title for most of the season, Milan’s poor finish and ultimate defeat in the last match marked a clear failure. They emphasized the need for a complete restructuring and a change in the football management setup.
Massimiliano Allegri’s departure is part of a broader shakeup at Milan, which has seen the exit of CEO Giorgio Furlani, Sporting Director Igli Tare, and Technical Director Geoffrey Moncada. Allegri, 58, returned to Milan last year, replacing Sergio Conceicao. In his previous stint from 2010 to 2014, Allegri led the team to a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season and secured the Italian Super Cup in 2011.
Milan’s season unraveled towards the end, with seven losses in their last 14 league matches. Meanwhile, Inter Milan clinched their second consecutive league title, overshadowing Milan’s disappointing campaign.
