Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) has successfully planted more than 1.6 million trees and saplings over 568 hectares at the Parsa East and Kanta Basan (PEKB) mine in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district. The once active mining area has now been converted into a lush green landscape, with 40 trees planted for every tree removed during mining activities.
Native species like Sal, Mahua, Tendu, Amaltas, and Sidha have been reintroduced, boasting an impressive survival rate of approximately 88%. AEL operates the mine on behalf of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RVUNL) and aims to further enhance the green cover to over 4 million trees by the decade’s end.
The Adani Group has set up a 3.5-hectare nursery with around 500,000 saplings and successfully regenerated Sal forests in the region. Additionally, compensatory afforestation has been carried out across more than 4,000 hectares in Surguja, Korea, Balrampur, and Surajpur forest divisions. An amount exceeding Rs 259 crore has been allocated to the Chhattisgarh government for afforestation, wildlife management, and environmental initiatives.
The Coal Ministry highlighted that post coal extraction, the focus shifts to ecological restoration and sustainable development. The PEKB Mine in Surguja, Chhattisgarh, serves as a prime example of this commitment, transitioning from a mining site to a vibrant green landscape. This transformation underscores the synergy between responsible mining practices and environmental preservation.
