Ahmedabad is set to endure intense heat over the next week, with temperatures soaring to 44 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange and Yellow alerts for the city from Friday until May 14. Yellow alerts are in place from May 8 to May 11 and again until the morning of May 14, while Orange alerts warning of heatwave conditions are effective until the mornings of May 11 and May 13.
The IMD’s Ahmedabad center predicts maximum temperatures ranging between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius during this period, with minimum temperatures expected to hover between 27 and 28 degrees Celsius. In response to the escalating temperatures, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has pinpointed 45 heat hotspots across the city for the next three days.
These hotspots have been identified based on temperature forecasts for 17 wards across six zones of the city, projecting peak temperatures in various localities. The AMC has introduced a QR code-based system for residents to access information on these hotspots and area-wise maximum temperatures, particularly between 12 noon and 5 p.m., the peak heat hours.
Residents are urged by the AMC to take precautions against extreme heat and dehydration. Recommendations include carrying water bottles while outdoors, consuming fluids like water, lemon juice, buttermilk, and coconut water regularly, and opting for fresh fruits and vegetables while avoiding certain foods and drinks. It is advised to stay indoors between 12 noon and 4 p.m., wear light-colored cotton clothing, and use umbrellas or caps when out in the sun.
For those engaged in outdoor activities, taking frequent breaks and resting in cool areas is advised. Special attention is emphasized for children, elderly individuals, and pregnant women who are more susceptible to heat-related issues. Symptoms of heatstroke and heat-related illnesses are highlighted, with residents experiencing such signs urged to seek medical help promptly or contact the 108 ambulance service in emergencies.
