With road congestion increasing in Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is making headway in a major traffic restructuring initiative. They have completed work on 37 junctions and are constructing 12 more as part of a plan to upgrade 100 key intersections in the city. The project aims to ease traffic bottlenecks at busy junctions and enhance road safety, with a focus on high-density areas.
The AMC, in collaboration with the city traffic police, is implementing the initiative. The process involves conducting traffic studies with support from educational institutions, preparing detailed designs, and obtaining clearance from the traffic police before commencing work. The goal is to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve safety at crucial junctions.
Efforts are ongoing to develop the remaining identified junctions in phases. Surveys and finalization of designs are currently in progress. Additionally, the corporation has extended the ‘Left Turn Free’ system to 76 junctions across Ahmedabad to facilitate smoother vehicular movement at busy intersections. This system allows vehicles to make left turns without waiting at signals, reducing signal delays and easing congestion on main roads.
The AMC has also enhanced road safety and traffic regulation infrastructure as part of the program. They have completed thermoplastic road marking over 1,19,000 square meters, including center lines, zebra crossings, and other markings. Moreover, approximately 6,900 traffic signboards have been installed throughout the city to improve driver guidance and compliance with traffic rules.
A recent joint meeting in the North-West Zone involving senior officials from the AMC and traffic police reviewed various traffic measures. Discussions centered on progress in junction development, traffic routing on specific corridors, expansion of free left-turn facilities, and other operational aspects. The civic body and traffic police are working together to implement traffic-related measures across different zones of the city.
