The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) conducted rigorous food safety checks in June, inspecting 1,877 food establishments and testing 709 food samples. Out of these samples, 46 were found to be either unsafe or substandard under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The Food Department of the civic body collected samples from various food categories like cold beverages, milk products, spices, and bakery items. Among the failed samples, two were deemed unsafe, leading to potential legal action against the respective Food Business Operators.
Additionally, the department issued 545 notices for food safety violations, destroyed over 2,700 kilograms of unhygienic food stock, and recovered administrative charges totaling Rs 10,29,500. They also implemented a QR code-based feedback system for street vendors to enhance food quality standards.
The corporation registered over 10,000 street food vendors under this initiative, with the top-rated vendors including Facebook Panipuri, Agrawal Kachori Centre, Krishna Pakodi Centre, Taste of South, and Jai Kishan Pakodi Centre. Inspection operations in June resulted in the sealing of four food establishments due to hygiene violations and non-compliance with food safety regulations.
