Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav expressed disapproval of the India-US trade deal, accusing the Centre of jeopardizing Indian farmers by allowing American agricultural products into the market. Yadav highlighted that a significant portion of India’s population relies on agriculture and questioned the government’s motives in compromising the nation’s self-sufficient farming system under external influences.
In a social media post, Yadav criticized the BJP for endangering farmers and questioned the reasons behind opening India’s agricultural market to American produce. He warned that this decision could negatively impact the livelihoods of millions of farmers, alleging that the BJP and its allies are serving foreign interests.
Yadav raised concerns about the potential repercussions of the trade deal on farmers and the middle class, emphasizing the emergence of intermediaries in the food grain and agricultural sectors. He cautioned that this could lead to increased prices of essential food items and accused corporate funding of exacerbating the situation.
The SP leader criticized the BJP for its policies favoring corporate interests over farmers, citing the Seed Bill as detrimental to Indian agriculture. He accused the government of subjecting farmers to hardships, such as queuing for fertilizers, and warned against the adverse effects of using certain seeds on Indian farming practices.
Yadav expressed apprehension that farmers’ incomes would decline, ultimately leading to land sales to affluent individuals and corporations. He called for unified opposition against policies that he believes undermine the interests of farmers and benefit the BJP through various stages of the agricultural cycle.
