Union Home and Cooperation Minister, Amit Shah, has directed civic and health authorities in Ahmedabad to take prompt corrective measures following reports of around 50 residents in Gota ward being treated for diarrhoea and vomiting. The incidents were linked to suspected contamination of the drinking water supply due to a leakage in water and drainage lines.
The affected cases were reported across nine residential societies near Jantanagar Cross Road in the Sola area of Gota ward. Officials mentioned that a technical fault during repair work led to the mixing of drainage and drinking water lines. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and senior officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) were briefed on the containment and restoration efforts in progress.
Health and engineering teams from the AMC responded swiftly to the situation by deploying medical teams to the locality and initiating disease control measures. The disruption occurred during repair work on a drainage line junction, causing contaminated water to enter the surrounding supply network. Cleaning of water tanks in the affected societies has commenced to address the issue.
Around 40 health department teams have been mobilized to conduct door-to-door surveys in the affected areas, with residents receiving chlorine tablets as a preventive measure. Medical treatment has been provided to the affected individuals, with 50 patients receiving OPD-based care and all reported to be in stable condition. The situation is being closely monitored as restoration work continues in the affected region.
