Asaduddin Owaisi dismissed claims by the Trinamool Congress that his party, AIMIM, is receiving financial support from the BJP for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Owaisi stated that he is willing to allocate 90% of the funding to the Trinamool Congress general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, retaining only 5% for himself and allocating the remaining 5% to his brother, Humayun Kabir.
Humayun Kabir, who recently launched his own political outfit, Aam Aadmi Unnayan Party (AAUP), was present at the press conference where the announcement was made. AIMIM and AAUP have formed a partnership for the West Bengal polls, focusing on constituencies with a significant minority population.
Owaisi refuted the allegations of BJP funding and questioned whether AIMIM played a role in the BJP’s increased presence in West Bengal, from three MLAs in 2016 to 77 in 2021. He emphasized that AIMIM will participate in the elections based on its own strength and principles.
Addressing the gathering, Owaisi accused the Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of exploiting the sentiments of Muslims. He criticized the Trinamool government for allegedly neglecting the minority community in West Bengal despite receiving substantial minority support in past elections.
