The Assam Cabinet has endorsed significant policy changes to boost tourism and attract private investment in higher education. These reforms aim to simplify regulations for homestays and reduce land requirements for private universities in the state. The decisions were made during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In a move to enhance the tourism sector, the Cabinet has given the green light to the Assam Tourism Accommodation (Development & Registration) Rules, 2026. These rules introduce a streamlined registration process for homestays and other tourism accommodations. Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the new rules establish a one-stop registration system, making it more convenient for individuals and entrepreneurs to register and manage homestays.
Furthermore, amendments to the Assam Private Universities Act, 2007, were approved by the Cabinet. These amendments notably reduce the minimum land requirement for establishing private universities in the state. The revised provisions lower the land requirement from 60 bighas to 35 bighas in rural areas and from 30 bighas to 21 bighas in urban areas. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that these changes aim to attract more private investment in higher education and facilitate the creation of quality educational institutions in Assam.
These reforms are part of the state government’s broader strategy to foster a more conducive environment for investments while advancing sustainable tourism and educational growth in Assam.
