When the Assembly poll results are declared, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hopes to secure the BJP’s first-ever majority without coalition partners. In the previous election, the BJP, along with allies, fell short of a majority but significantly increased its vote share.
In the 2016 election, the BJP formed the government with the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, collectively winning 60 seats out of 126. The Congress, which previously held power, saw a decline in seats to 26.
Despite winning 60 seats again in 2021, the BJP aims to secure a clear majority this time. Sarma, who became Chief Minister in 2021, has been instrumental in the party’s strategies and ideological shifts in the region. His leadership has focused on development and security issues, particularly concerning border-state security.
Sarma’s tenure has been marked by a shift from the Congress to the BJP, citing leadership conflicts and ideological differences. He has emphasized the party’s stance on national security and border issues, aligning with his vision for Assam. The Chief Minister has also addressed concerns regarding identity and regional interests, particularly in the context of demographic changes and alleged infiltrations.
