Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) landslide victory in the Assembly elections to public backlash against Congress leader Pawan Khera’s comments targeting his family. Sarma stated that Khera’s remarks, particularly about his wife, struck a chord with the people of Assam, influencing the election outcome. He emphasized that while political debates are normal, involving family members crosses a line for the public.
Sarma highlighted that the electorate’s support for the BJP signified a rejection of what he termed as “negative politics” and a preference for development-focused governance. He noted that personal allegations and negative campaigning by the Congress failed to resonate with voters, who opted for a platform centered on progress. The Chief Minister pointed out that the issue of personal attacks became a significant topic during the campaign, leading to a consolidated backing for the BJP across constituencies.
Recently, the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to Pawan Khera in a case filed by Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, following Khera’s accusations of her holding multiple foreign passports and having financial interests abroad. The complaint, lodged by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, invoked various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to false statements, cheating, forgery, and defamation.
