Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that various government medical colleges and hospitals in the state have obtained accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). This move aims to standardize healthcare services in public health institutions. The state government has instructed all medical colleges in Assam to secure NABH accreditation to ensure consistent healthcare standards and enhance patient care in government hospitals.
Five major medical institutions, including Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH) in Barpeta, and Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), have already received NABH accreditation. The Chief Minister emphasized that this accreditation signifies adherence to nationally recognized benchmarks in patient safety, quality of care, hospital management, clinical protocols, and healthcare infrastructure.
Inspections have been finalized at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, with the institution awaiting the outcome of the accreditation process. Additionally, two Critical Care Assam Centres in Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur have also achieved NABH certification. Chief Minister Sarma mentioned that more healthcare facilities are anticipated to join the list in the upcoming months. NABH accreditation is considered a crucial quality certification for healthcare institutions in the country, aiding in enhancing operational efficiency, patient outcomes, and maintaining global medical service standards.
The Assam government’s focus on expanding healthcare infrastructure and enhancing service quality in public hospitals has led to the establishment of new medical colleges, increased MBBS seats, and bolstered specialized healthcare facilities across districts. The broader goal is to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality medical services to citizens. Officials believe that broader NABH accreditation among government hospitals will boost public confidence in the healthcare system, aligning with the state’s healthcare objectives.
