The Assam government has transferred Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Principal Dr Achyut Baishya to Nalbari Medical College and Hospital following allegations of workplace harassment by a senior woman doctor. Dr Baishya will now serve as Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent at Nalbari Medical College and Hospital. Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah has been appointed as the new Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of GMCH.
The transfer of Dr Baishya comes in the wake of accusations made earlier this year by a senior woman doctor at GMCH. The doctor had filed a complaint of workplace harassment, intimidation, and administrative victimization against Dr Baishya. Allegations included inappropriate remarks and obstruction of departmental functions.
In response to the allegations, the Assam government set up a two-member inquiry committee led by women officials to investigate the complaint. Additionally, the police launched a preliminary investigation into the matter. Dr Baishya, however, denied any misconduct and expressed willingness to cooperate with the inquiry process.
The recent transfer order did not reference the ongoing inquiry or provide reasons for the administrative reshuffle. Dr Baishya had previously refrained from public comments on the issue, citing legal advice.
