Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced that Assam witnessed a substantial decrease in crime rates, as per the latest “Crime in India 2024” report by the National Crime Records Bureau. In 2024, the state recorded 49,552 criminal cases, a notable decline from 64,959 cases in 2023 and 68,937 cases in 2022.
The data revealed by the minister indicated an overall drop of almost 28% in crime cases over the past two years. Currently, Assam’s crime rate stands at 137 cases per one lakh population, significantly lower than the national average of 418 cases per lakh population reported by the NCRB.
Minister Mallabaruah highlighted a remarkable increase in the state’s charge-sheeting rate, which rose to 67.1% in 2024 from below 50% in previous years. This improvement was attributed to faster investigations, enhanced coordination among law enforcement agencies, and stronger legal follow-up measures.
Officials mentioned that the state government has been focusing on modernizing policing infrastructure, enhancing surveillance systems, and strengthening intelligence networks to combat criminal activities. The NCRB report reflects a changing security scenario in Assam and shows improving public safety indicators across various districts.
