Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has highlighted the need for new measures to safeguard the country’s people from the current global economic uncertainty stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. Addressing an automotive industry event, Albanese referred to the Middle East conflict as a significant blow to the global economy, following the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He emphasized the importance of protecting the Australian economy, households, and businesses from the adverse effects of global uncertainty.
Albanese revealed plans for an emergency meeting with state and territory leaders to ensure the effective distribution of fuel from national reserves, particularly to regional communities. He stressed the necessity for Australia to enhance its self-reliance and resilience in the face of economic challenges. Additionally, Treasurer Jim Chalmers mentioned that the upcoming federal budget will focus on addressing inflation, productivity, and global economic uncertainties.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Albanese confirmed the deployment of military assets to the Middle East for assisting in the repatriation of Australian citizens stranded in the region due to travel disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict. The deployed assets reportedly include a transport aircraft and a refueling plane. The government also announced the dispatch of crisis response teams to the Middle East from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to offer additional consular support to citizens in need.
