A 36-year-old autorickshaw driver in Bengaluru, identified as Yusuf, took his own life after facing alleged harassment from a moneylender demanding repayment of a loan with high interest rates. The family stated that the moneylender, Umesh, charged a monthly interest rate of 30%, leading to continuous harassment for repayment of the principal amount.
Yusuf recorded a live selfie video before consuming poison, expressing distress over Umesh’s actions. The video revealed that despite Yusuf’s financial struggles and pleas for relief from the high interest rates, the moneylender persisted in demanding payment.
Following a complaint by Yusuf’s family, the Bagaluru police have filed an FIR against Umesh and initiated an investigation into the matter. The police are currently examining the allegations and the video evidence to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Yusuf’s tragic decision.
It is noted that another individual, Sampath Dandagi, also died by suicide in Gadag city, Karnataka, after facing similar harassment and threats from moneylenders. Sampath, a bookstore owner, blamed the lenders in a detailed death note for pushing him to take his own life due to the relentless pressure over loan repayment.
