The Bengal Police apprehended Mohammad Jasimuddin, a Trinamool Congress councillor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), on allegations of molesting and harassing a minor girl. This marks the eighth arrest of a Trinamool Congress councillor from KMC on various charges following the recent change in government. Jasimuddin, representing ward number 39 in Jorasanko area, central Kolkata, was taken into custody from his residence after a prolonged wait and subsequent forced entry by the authorities.
Tension has gripped the locality in response to the incident, with Jasimuddin’s supporters staging protests outside his house. Concurrently, BJP backers also joined the demonstration and reportedly pelted eggs at the detained councillor. The police have registered a case against Jasimuddin under multiple sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Local sources indicate that Jasimuddin’s close aides were implicated in the harassment of the same minor girl three years ago, who is now a college student. The recent incident in the Kalabagan area, where the girl was allegedly harassed again and threatened to withdraw the previous case, led to her family filing a fresh complaint with the Jorasanko police station. One individual associated with Jasimuddin was arrested in connection with the episode, with police initiating legal action against five individuals, including the councillor.
Jasimuddin, who had previously been affiliated with the CPI(M), switched to the Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2015 municipal corporation elections. He secured victory in two consecutive elections on a Trinamool ticket. Sources from the Trinamool party suggest that he was linked to former MLA Vivek Gupta, who was denied a ticket from Jorasanko in the 2026 Assembly elections.
