Bihar’s Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar refrained from addressing queries about the Hijab controversy involving Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, amidst escalating political tensions in the state. When questioned by journalists about potential actions against the Chief Minister, especially following Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary’s remarks on strict measures against troublemakers, the DGP chose not to respond directly. Instead, he highlighted the government’s and police department’s efforts towards enhancing women’s safety. DGP Kumar disclosed the establishment of an “Abhaya Brigade” in Bihar aimed at bolstering women’s security. He also revealed plans for procuring 2,000 scooters next year for women police personnel to patrol coaching institutes, colleges, public areas, and crowded spots for prompt intervention against offenders. This initiative seeks to ensure rapid responses and elevate women’s safety standards throughout Bihar. The incident that sparked the controversy occurred on December 15 during the distribution of appointment letters to AYUSH doctors in Patna. Allegedly, Nitish Kumar removed the hijab of a Muslim woman doctor, Nusrat Parveen, while she was receiving her appointment letter. The Chief Minister’s actions, captured on video and widely circulated, led to significant public outcry.
