The Bihar government’s recent decision to adjust security measures for various members of RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family has ignited a political discussion in the state. This move, based on a reassessment of threat levels and existing security protocols, has drawn criticism from the opposition, who claim it has political motives. Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, expressed disapproval of the reduced security for her father and Rabri Devi, labeling it as a form of political vendetta.
The alteration in security arrangements, which downgraded the Z+ security cover for Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, has raised questions about the reasoning behind diminishing protection for former Chief Ministers. Rohini Acharya emphasized that diminishing the security of political adversaries raises concerns about democratic principles and constitutional duties. She argued that considering the extensive public and political careers of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, their security should not be subject to political considerations.
The revised security measures have maintained the Y+ security cover for Tejashwi Yadav without any modifications. Additionally, security arrangements for Tej Pratap Yadav, Misa Bharti, and Rajshri Yadav have been finalized in line with the updated security review. Government sources indicated that these changes were part of a routine assessment process, where security levels are determined based on the individuals’ current constitutional roles and intelligence inputs on potential threats.
Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, both former Chief Ministers of Bihar, previously had Z+ security cover, which typically includes a larger security detail, residential guards, and escort vehicles. The adjustment in security provision has become a point of contention between the ruling coalition and the opposition in Bihar. While government officials assert that this revision is a standard practice based on threat assessments, opposition leaders view it as a retaliatory political move.
