A BJP delegation, led by Himachal Pradesh President Rajeev Bindal, met Governor Kavinder Gupta to address concerns about alleged interference in Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body elections by the state Congress government. The delegation, including Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and other senior BJP leaders, submitted a memorandum highlighting attempts to manipulate democratic processes and influence public mandate. Rajeev Bindal emphasized the importance of protecting democracy and constitutional values during a media address post the meeting.
The BJP delegation accused the government of making changes to election rules and reservation provisions after the election process had commenced. They claimed these alterations were aimed at granting excessive discretionary powers to officials and benefiting Congress leaders indirectly. The party expressed confidence in a significant defeat for Congress in the local body elections due to alleged public dissatisfaction with the ruling party. Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur criticized the government for continuous efforts to weaken democratic institutions in the state.
Thakur alleged that the Chief Minister violated the Model Code of Conduct by announcing financial incentives and development funds during election rallies in support of Congress-backed candidates. He cited instances of BJP-supported candidates securing clear majorities in various Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats across the state. Thakur further accused the government of attempting to delay the election process and engage in political pressure tactics through rule amendments.
Former Chief Minister Thakur raised concerns about elected representatives facing threats of vigilance inquiries and administrative actions if they did not support Congress-backed groups. He highlighted instances of Cabinet decisions being made during the Model Code of Conduct enforcement, which BJP believed were intended to influence voters and elected representatives. The BJP delegation urged the Governor to intervene and safeguard democratic values, constitutional processes, and the integrity of the people’s mandate in Himachal Pradesh.
