In a significant operation at the India-Nepal border, the Border Intelligence Team (BIT) of the 41Bn Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Ranidanga, intercepted a Maruti Suzuki WagonR carrying two individuals. Upon inspection at New Mechi Bridge, three suspected foreign-origin diamonds were found concealed in the baggage of one passenger. The apprehended persons are identified as Purna Kumar Tamang and Sujit Lohar.
Tamang, a Nepali citizen with ties to Hong Kong, claimed ownership of the recovered diamonds during interrogation. However, he failed to provide valid documentation proving the lawful acquisition of the gems. Both individuals, along with the diamonds and the vehicle, have been transferred to the Customs Office in Panitanki for further investigation and legal procedures.
Efforts are underway to verify Tamang’s background and activities in Sikkim since his entry into India on June 21. Authorities are also looking into the origin of the seized diamonds and plan to collaborate with officials in Nepal and Hong Kong for additional information. This incident follows a recent case where two Sikkim residents were caught with unaccounted Indian currency while en route to Nepal.
