Biswajit Sarkar, brother of Abhijit Sarkar who was killed in post-poll violence after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, has raised doubts about recent attacks on Trinamool Congress MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee, suggesting they were planned. He criticized the TMC leadership for their earlier silence during similar violent incidents that led to his brother’s death. Sarkar highlighted the lack of justice and compensation for his family despite appeals.
Sarkar pointed out the sudden interest of political figures in discussing violence, questioning the BJP’s motives in light of recent incidents involving Trinamool Congress leaders. He emphasized the prolonged struggle for justice faced by families affected by the 2021 unrest in West Bengal, highlighting the delay in implementing the NHRC’s compensation recommendations. Sarkar accused politicians of exploiting recent attacks to manipulate public perception and enhance their security measures.
Drawing a comparison between the handling of violence cases in 2021 and the current political climate, Sarkar noted the differences, particularly in the arrest of suspects involved in his brother’s murder. He highlighted the disparity in FIR registrations and named individuals between the TMC and BJP governments, urging a critical assessment of the two administrations’ approaches to post-poll violence investigations. Abhijit Sarkar’s death in 2021 remains a significant case linked to the unrest in West Bengal, with ongoing legal proceedings under the CBI.
