Bruno Fernandes has been awarded the Premier League Player of the Season for his outstanding performance that helped Manchester United secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League. The Portugal international had a remarkable season, showcasing creativity, leadership, and consistency, making him a standout player in the English top flight. This accolade makes Fernandes the first Manchester United player to receive this award since Nemanja Vidic in 2011.
Fernandes’ impact was notably seen in his exceptional creativity on the field. He achieved his 20th assist of the season against Nottingham Forest, equalling the Premier League record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. With one more game left against Brighton & Hove Albion, Fernandes has the chance to set a new record for the most assists in a single Premier League season.
In addition to his playmaking skills, Fernandes also contributed eight goals in the league, totaling 28 goal involvements in 37 appearances this season. His 132 chances created in the Premier League surpassed all other players, with a significant lead over the next best player, Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool. Fernandes’ recent award follows his recognition as the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year, further highlighting his exceptional performances during United’s resurgence.
Despite uncertainties earlier in the season due to managerial changes and inconsistencies, Fernandes remained a driving force for Manchester United. His leadership and performance were pivotal in the team’s climb to third place under Michael Carrick, securing their return to Champions League football. Fernandes emerged as the top choice from a competitive shortlist that included other notable players like Declan Rice, David Raya, and Erling Haaland.
