A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court dismissed a request from the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction for an expedited hearing regarding the freezing of three party bank accounts. The accounts were frozen by a private sector commercial bank following police instructions earlier this month.
The freezing of the accounts was initiated after a letter from the party’s former treasurer, Aroop Biswas, now part of the opposing faction, raised concerns about potential fund misappropriation. Subsequently, Trinamool Congress MLAs from the same faction approached the police with a similar request, leading to the freezing of accounts holding Rs 440 crore.
Despite the faction’s plea for a fast-track hearing, the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, declined the request, deciding that the case would proceed as per the regular schedule. The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, representing the West Bengal government, confirmed readiness for a hearing on July 2 after receiving the case documents.
