Authorities in Canada are ramping up efforts to address a series of extortion cases in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. The British Columbia Extortion Task Force, initiated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 2025, is currently investigating the involvement of 111 foreign nationals in these incidents. Investigators are scrutinizing closed-circuit television footage and digital evidence to uncover networks operating across different jurisdictions, with cases involving threats and monetary demands targeting individuals and businesses.
The task force emphasized that immigration or refugee status will not shield individuals engaged in criminal activities from facing legal consequences. Since its inception in September last year, the task force has taken on 32 extortion-related cases from police agencies in British Columbia. Efforts have been made to connect isolated incidents, dismantle organized groups, and prevent further offenses. A recent report highlighted the interconnected nature of Khalistani extremism and Punjabi-Canadian gang violence in Canada, stressing the importance of enhanced border security and financial intelligence cooperation to combat these issues.
Canada is home to a significant Sikh diaspora, with concerns raised about a violent fringe within the Punjabi-Canadian community being involved in transnational organized crime. The report also mentioned the alleged diversion of criminal proceeds to fund Khalistan separatist activities in the diaspora. While the majority of Canadian Sikhs reject violence and separatism, challenges persist due to political reluctance in addressing the criminal-extremist nexus. Efforts to dismantle this nexus are crucial to safeguard the reputation of the broader Sikh community in Canada.
