A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon commenced on Friday, as declared by US President Donald Trump. The truce aims to halt a month-long deadly escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, resulting in over 2,000 casualties. The international community has welcomed the ceasefire, urging all parties to adhere strictly to the agreement and cease hostilities, according to Xinhua news agency.
“We welcome steps that would end hostilities and suffering on both sides of the Blue Line,” stated Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, emphasizing the importance of abiding by the ceasefire. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit lauded the ceasefire as a positive move to alleviate the Lebanese people’s suffering, urging immediate compliance and serious negotiations for a sustainable ceasefire.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also expressed support for the truce, highlighting its role in the Pakistan-mediated two-week ceasefire deal between Iran and the United States to halt the war, as reported by official news agency IRNA.
