Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar recently briefed Central Observers on utilizing IT platforms to guarantee fair and transparent upcoming Assembly elections in five states and Union Territories. The observers for Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal were urged to uphold the Election Commission of India’s standards and ensure the integrity of the electoral process. A total of 1,444 General, Police, and Expenditure Observers participated in the briefing, emphasizing the critical role they play in maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process.

Election Commissioner S.S. Sandhu emphasized that the Central Observers should act as mentors and support systems for election officials in the field. Sandhu stressed the importance of publicizing their presence and promptly addressing any concerns raised by voters to prevent any perception of bias. Additionally, Election Commissioner Vivek Joshi highlighted the need for the observers to strictly adhere to ECI guidelines, emphasizing the importance of impartiality and democratic principles in the electoral process.

The observers were tasked with ensuring the timely distribution of Voter Information Slips to voters to avoid any inconvenience on polling day. They were instructed to maintain open communication with political parties, candidates, and voters to address grievances promptly. Furthermore, the observers were directed to visit polling stations to oversee the implementation of recent ECI initiatives aimed at enhancing voter convenience, including the provision of Assured Minimum Facilities.

Senior officials of the ECI provided the observers with detailed briefings on electoral roll preparation and election conduct in the five states and Union Territories. The observers were also educated on various IT applications, platforms, and media-related matters to enhance their efficiency in overseeing the electoral process. Central Observers are appointed by the ECI under constitutional provisions to ensure the smooth and fair conduct of elections at the grassroots level.
