Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma praised the Dorbar Shnong of Madanriting, East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya, for its community-driven projects. The Dorbar Shnong, a traditional village council in Meghalaya, plays a vital role in local governance, especially among the Khasi and Jaintia communities.
Led by a Rangbah Shnong, the council manages local affairs, resolves minor disputes, maintains public areas, conducts welfare activities, and upholds customary traditions. While not a formal governmental body, the Dorbar Shnong holds significant influence at the grassroots level and collaborates with authorities on civic and developmental issues.
During an event at St Peter’s Secondary School in Shillong, the Chief Minister commended the Dorbar Shnong for acquiring an ambulance and a mortuary van for the community. He inaugurated both vehicles, emphasizing their importance in providing transportation for the sick, injured, and deceased, ensuring safe and dignified services.
Expressing the value of recognition and gratitude, Sangma highlighted the impact of acknowledging people’s contributions, regardless of scale. He praised the Dorbar Shnong’s initiative to honor outstanding students, Covid frontline workers, police personnel, sanitation staff, healthcare workers, athletes, and senior citizens, considering it a commendable effort.
In response to concerns raised by the Dorbar Shnong, the Chief Minister pledged support for enhancing facilities at the Madanriting playground, including renovation and construction works, along with the construction of a retaining wall for the community hall. He also committed to installing street lights and CCTV cameras as part of the My City Campaign.
Sangma additionally announced a financial aid of Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant for schools participating in cultural and musical activities. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Co-Chairman of the Meghalaya State Law Commission Lambor Malniang, former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Wansuk Syiem, Dorbar Shnong members, local residents, students, and teachers.
