China has initiated the deployment of DeepZang, an artificial intelligence platform in Tibet that operates in the Tibetan language. Launched in March, DeepZang aims to influence the creation, accessibility, and comprehension of information related to Tibet. The platform is part of China’s strategy to reinforce its authority in the region, as reported by Greece City Times.
The Chinese government has introduced various AI-driven applications in Tibet to provide state services digitally in alignment with official positions on sensitive topics like religion and governance. DeepZang’s primary goal is to promote linguistic inclusivity by offering services in Tibetan while also embedding state-approved terminology and viewpoints to strengthen Beijing’s control over Tibet.
DeepZang distinguishes itself from traditional censorship tools by generating comprehensive explanations, summaries, and narratives aligned with state-approved perspectives. By consistently using terms like ‘Xizang’ instead of ‘Tibet,’ the platform aims to normalize Beijing’s preferred language, influencing both perception and political understanding over time. Analysts are monitoring the platform’s integration into Tibetan schools, government services, and public digital infrastructure.
The application’s approach of providing a single AI-generated response could potentially sway users without exposing them to diverse viewpoints. China’s historical control over Tibet through administrative oversight, technological surveillance, and coercive measures has been a longstanding concern. Additionally, reports suggest that China’s significant lithium production post-2025 is leading to a gradual erosion of Tibetan autonomy, with benefits primarily accruing to Mainland China.
