China has been criticized for escalating human rights violations in Tibet, with the International Campaign for Tibet expressing deep concern over the situation. The organization’s executive director, Ryan Fioresi, highlighted China’s implementation of the Ethnic Unity and Progress Law on July 1, which he believes legalizes policies aimed at eroding Tibet’s unique identity. Fioresi emphasized that these actions contradict China’s own constitution and international human rights obligations.
The International Campaign for Tibet has called for global attention to the new law, urging governments, the United Nations, and religious leaders to speak out against China’s efforts to erase Tibetan identity. Fioresi stressed the importance of diplomatic pressure on China, particularly from the United States, to push for dialogue with the Dalai Lama or his representatives for a negotiated resolution on Tibet. He emphasized the need to address the Tibetan people’s grievances and secure their autonomy and basic rights through meaningful dialogue.
Speaking at an event in Washington commemorating the Dalai Lama’s 91st birthday, Fioresi highlighted the spiritual leader’s message of compassion and non-violence as crucial in today’s global conflicts. He underscored the simplicity of the Dalai Lama’s teachings, which have the potential to transform relationships between individuals and nations. Fioresi also acknowledged the longstanding support from the US government for the Tibetan movement, calling for continued bipartisan efforts to engage China in constructive dialogue for the benefit of Tibetans.
