A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police recently visited Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s residence on Harish Mukherjee Road in South Kolkata. Security informed them that the property had been vacant for a few days. Meanwhile, Banerjee was found at the residence of the party’s state general secretary and legislator in North Kolkata.
The CID later served Banerjee a notice at his Kalighat residence in South Kolkata, instructing him to appear at their headquarters on June 1. Banerjee acknowledged receiving the notice and expressed willingness to cooperate based on legal advice. He asserted his readiness to cooperate but also stated his resolve not to yield, even suggesting the possibility of his arrest.
The notice is reportedly linked to an ongoing CID investigation concerning discrepancies in the signatures of certain Trinamool Congress legislators on a resolution nominating key positions in the West Bengal Assembly. Banerjee had sent a letter nominating individuals for these roles, but discrepancies in signatures led to the CID’s involvement.
Banerjee had received a notice from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation regarding a property on Harish Mukherjee Road, owned by a company associated with his family. Since the election results ended Trinamool Congress’s long-standing rule, Banerjee had largely stayed indoors. However, he recently met a party worker in North Kolkata and addressed issues related to his properties with the media.
