A clash between two local clubs over a cricket match in the Barakar area of West Burdwan district’s Asansol turned violent, with shots reportedly fired in front of the Barakar police outpost. Despite the gunfire, there were no casualties reported.
Locals claimed that the shots were fired into the air, and police discovered two spent bullet casings at the scene. Following the incident, a significant police presence was deployed to the area upon receiving information. During the confrontation, stones and bricks were allegedly thrown at the police, resulting in injuries to several officers.
The conflict originated on Sunday when youths from neighboring areas were playing cricket near the Barakar police outpost. An altercation over a minor issue escalated tensions, prompting the intervention of local authorities. Both groups were summoned to the police station, where discussions helped defuse the situation temporarily.
However, the following morning witnessed a resurgence of hostilities, transforming the area into a battleground with exchanges of bricks and alleged gunfire. To restore order, a large police force resorted to baton charges. An investigation has been initiated by the police to identify the perpetrators and determine the individuals responsible for firing the shots.
A senior officer from the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate confirmed the commencement of an investigation into the incident, emphasizing that the situation is currently under control despite injuries sustained by some officers.
