Columnist Shobaa De expressed that the recent West Bengal Assembly election outcome signifies a significant loss for the Trinamool Congress and a personal setback for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. De, in an Instagram video, celebrated the people of Kolkata for their role in this historic election victory. She highlighted that Banerjee’s defeat was attributed to the dissatisfaction of women in the state due to her lack of empathy and solidarity towards them.
De described the election result as a substantial blow, not just to Banerjee’s party but also as a deeply personal defeat for the Chief Minister. She emphasized the need for change in governance, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for transformation and the people’s rejection of corruption and neglect of public concerns. De concluded by commending the voters of West Bengal for their high turnout and decisive choice for a new direction in the state’s leadership.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to establish the next government in West Bengal with a significant majority, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year tenure. The BJP secured 206 seats out of 294, surpassing the Trinamool Congress, which won 81 seats. Banerjee herself lost her Bhabanipur seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by a considerable margin. The BJP garnered 46% of the vote share, while the Trinamool Congress received 41%.
