The Congress party has accused the BJP-led Union government of trying to secure a “tainted two-thirds majority in Parliament,” which they believe is unlikely to happen. Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Naseer Hussain expressed that even if the government achieves this majority, it would be a disgrace and an insult to India’s Constitution. The party’s Parliamentary Strategy Group meeting saw discussions on the Delimitation Bill and the opposition’s plans to ensure unity against it.
The Congress anticipates the reintroduction of the Delimitation Bill by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, following its previous failure to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha. Party leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are in contact with opposition parties such as the DMK and AAP to strengthen opposition unity against the bill. Congress reiterated its stance on supporting one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha if the government makes the provision within the current strength.
During the meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi, the Congress discussed the lack of formal information on upcoming legislations for the Monsoon session of Parliament. Jairam Ramesh expressed skepticism about the outcomes of an all-party meeting, considering it a mere formality. The failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, has reignited debates on women’s political reservation and other related issues.
Allegations were made by the Congress against the Union government for causing rifts in parties like Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena. The party emphasized that the ruling NDA coalition is still short of the required majority and is unlikely to achieve it. Congress plans to raise various issues in the upcoming session, including the reported theft of donations in Ayodhya’s Ram Temple and concerns about the education system. They also intend to address the “E-20 scam” and foreign policy challenges, among other topics.
