The Congress party has officially declared its support for actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to lead the next government in Tamil Nadu. This support comes with the condition that the alliance remains free from “communal forces,” as stated by Congress’ Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar. Vijay, who emerged as the largest party in the recent elections, sought Congress’ backing for government formation.
The Congress emphasized that the electoral outcome reflects a mandate for a government based on secular, progressive, and welfare principles aligned with constitutional values. The decision to support TVK was made by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislature Party, acknowledging the choice of the people, especially the youth, in favor of TVK and Vijay to lead the state.
However, the Congress stressed that its support hinges on TVK’s commitment to keeping out “communal forces” that oppose the Indian Constitution, which is perceived as a reference to the BJP and its allies. TVK, despite falling short of the majority mark by 10 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, secured 108 seats in its debut election, indicating the potential significance of Congress’ backing in government formation.
The alliance between TVK and the Congress party aims to uphold the legacy of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and the social justice principles of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and the constitutional vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. This partnership is viewed as a historic responsibility that extends beyond government formation to future elections, including local body, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha polls. Vijay and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi are committed to honoring the people’s mandate and fulfilling the aspirations of Tamil Nadu, particularly those of the youth.
