Congress has taken its case to the Supreme Court after its Rajya Sabha candidate, Meenakshi Natarajan, had her nomination from Madhya Pradesh rejected. The party is set to raise the issue urgently before the court’s vacation bench. The rejection came following objections raised by the BJP, alleging that Natarajan did not disclose a legal case in Telangana in her nomination papers.
The objections against Natarajan’s nomination were based on allegations by A. Srilatha, a former corporate executive, who accused Natarajan of providing political support to Kumbham Shivakumar Reddy. Natarajan refuted these claims, calling them a political conspiracy and challenging Srilatha’s petition in a Hyderabad court. She maintained that the accusations were an attempt to tarnish her reputation.
Natarajan criticized the Returning Officers, accusing them of being influenced and acting in favor of the government. The Congress candidate, who was the sole nominee from Madhya Pradesh, faced cancellation of her nomination over allegations of concealing information about a case in a Telangana court. Natarajan expressed dismay at what she perceived as attempts to undermine democracy and disrespect the institutions established by the country’s founders.
In a scathing rebuke of the BJP-led government, Natarajan condemned the Returning Officers, alleging that they were compromised and operating as extensions of the ruling party. She decried what she saw as a deliberate effort to obstruct the democratic process and criticized the lack of impartiality in the conduct of the election officials.
