The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has praised the Tamil Nadu government’s move to lift constraints on the sale of thousands of acres of inam lands in Karur district. This decision is seen as a significant step towards protecting the land and housing rights of underprivileged families residing on these lands for many years.
The order issued by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department on July 9 has removed the longstanding restrictions on the transfer of 3,084 acres of land. Despite being owned and occupied by poor families for over 60 years, these lands were bound by the Inam Abolition Act.
The CPI(M) State Executive Committee expressed its approval of the government’s action, emphasizing that it would safeguard the rights of numerous families who were previously unable to freely sell, transfer, or secure legal ownership of their lands due to these restrictions.
The party’s leader criticized Sangh Parivar organizations for politicizing the issue and highlighted the government’s efforts to address encroachments on temple lands during the previous AIADMK regime. Shanmugam urged the state government to develop a comprehensive policy based on the Karur decision to resolve inam land disputes across Tamil Nadu effectively.
