The national capital, Delhi, is gearing up for another intense heatwave following a brief respite from cloudy weather and lower temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, predicting heatwave conditions over the next three days, with temperatures ranging between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius. The IMD forecasts a further rise in mercury in the coming days before a slight improvement later in the week.
Humidity levels in Delhi have been at 37 percent, contributing to the discomfort experienced by residents. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the IMD has hinted at the possibility of light rainfall in some parts of the city by Sunday evening. Relief is expected towards the end of the month, with predictions of light showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds that may help lower temperatures across the region.
Several states in the country are also facing extreme weather conditions. Red alerts have been issued for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra due to severe heatwaves. Additionally, orange alerts are in effect for Telangana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Karnataka. In Delhi, the air quality remains in the “poor” category, with various areas recording different Air Quality Index (AQI) levels.
