The Delhi government, led by Rekha Gupta, is initiating a reform to enhance urban mobility by establishing a Delhi Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (DUMTA) and a dedicated Delhi Urban Transport Fund (DUTF). This move aims to streamline and coordinate Delhi’s diverse transport systems under a unified planning and governance structure. Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that the proposed DUMTA will integrate various modes of transport, such as metro, buses, railways, and feeder services, to provide efficient and citizen-centric mobility solutions.
The creation of DUMTA signifies a crucial step towards developing a modern, sustainable transport network in the national capital. The task force, chaired by Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, will be responsible for drafting the legislation for the establishment of DUMTA. Chief Minister Gupta highlighted the authority’s role in reducing traffic congestion, enhancing public transport, and promoting a transition from private vehicles to more eco-friendly modes of transportation.
Chief Minister Gupta stressed the importance of combating air pollution in Delhi by reducing reliance on private vehicles and promoting cleaner mobility options for residents. She emphasized the need for a well-connected public transport system to address vehicular emissions, a significant contributor to local pollution levels. The government’s focus on implementing structural reforms aligns with the long-term strategy to tackle pollution and improve environmental sustainability in the region.
