The Delhi government plans to introduce a ‘Delhi Building and Construction Workers Health Scheme’ aimed at safeguarding the health of 2.7 lakh registered building and construction workers along with their families, announced Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. This initiative is anticipated to benefit around 10 lakh individuals, with an annual budget of approximately Rs 200 crore allocated by the government. The scheme will offer free medical services, including yearly health check-ups, to the workers and their families, ensuring a cashless treatment process to alleviate any financial burdens.
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s dedication to the welfare of all societal segments, especially the impoverished, laborers, and disadvantaged families. Recognizing the pivotal role of construction workers in the city’s progress, she highlighted the significance of enhancing their health and social security. Construction laborers face various occupational hazards like exposure to dust, chemicals, noise, and strenuous working conditions, making them susceptible to health issues such as silicosis, respiratory ailments, and skin disorders.
Under this scheme, registered construction workers and their eligible family members will have access to quality healthcare services through affiliated hospitals and mobile health units. Each worker can avail treatment worth up to Rs 2 lakh at designated hospitals, while families can receive medical care up to Rs 10 lakh, all without any financial obligations. Additionally, beneficiaries will benefit from annual health check-ups, free OPD and IPD services, diagnostic facilities, emergency medical aid, and referral services.
The health services will extend to construction sites and areas with high worker concentrations through Mobile Medical Units. The scheme will also establish digital health records for beneficiaries and a modern tracking system to ensure efficient monitoring and transparent service delivery. Furthermore, a 24/7 toll-free helpline will be operational to provide assistance to workers in need.
